The key to overcoming selfishness is to stop focusing on ourselves, including the inclination to beat ourselves up or to become ascetic. Instead we should look up to God, allow our lives to be about His kingdom and agenda and be sensitive to those in our sphere that He wants us to help and minister to.

The Lord wants to cultivate within us a maturity that advances beyond mere surrender (where we say, "I give up ...") to submission, where we make a choice to give to God our hopes, dreams, weaknesses, strengths, treasures, time and talents, along with everything else in our lives. God's aim to to take us to a higher place where we can see with an eternal view and be free of the insecurities of this world.
