History of Smithtown Christian School
The Smithtown Christian School, a ministry of Smithtown Gospel Tabernacle, was founded in 1978 upon the acquisition of the 15-acre campus of the Sweet Briar Public School. Beginning with fifty-nine students, classes included Kindergarten through Grade five.
The major objective and vision of the school is to provide an academic experience of excellence and to prepare young people for Christian leadership roles, wherever their vocational or professional goals would lead them. "Educating Tomorrow's Christian Leaders Today" is the mission statement of SCS.
Organizationally, the school began with 2 goals in mind, one was that two sections of each grade, (K-6), would be established. SCS follows the traditional classroom structure. The second goal involved the initiation of a high school program offering grades seven through twelve. Both of these goals have been realized.
Upon completion of requirements for registration set by NYS state education department, students of the first senior class (1991) received NYS diplomas upon graduation. All graduates since that time have received the same diplomas.
The School includes in its enrollment, students from over one hundred churches and draws from over thirty Long Island school districts.
The Early Childhood Division consists of the Happy-Time Preschool and the Smithtown Christian Day Care Center, The Elementary Division provides for Kindergarten through Grade 6. The Secondary Division includes Divisions 7-12. Enrollment, including all grades, totals 630 students.
The school has been a member of the Association of Christian Schools International since 1989. ACSI is the largest Christian School organization in the nation.
